Students have tons of options this summer to take part in fun, exciting learning opportunities to keep their minds active, along with sports to keep their bodies moving! Check out the program options below along with Summer Break Resources for Families.

 Adventures in the City

Adventures in the City = OPENINGS ARE STILL AVAILABLE!

MPS and Wilderness Inquiry are providing high school students in the exciting opportunity to discover more about Minneapolis in a series of day trips exploring the city to learn about our history, nature and spaces. Activities include:

  • Canoeing
  • Hiking
  • Observing nature and experiencing local ecosystems in lakes, rivers and parks
  • Identifying plants and animals
  • Spray painting storm drains with eco-friendly messages.

Students will work with MPS teachers to either:

  • Recover credits in Biology and English 9-12 (available to 10, 11 and 12 graders)


  • Participate in experiential education (open to 9-12 graders)

Two one-week sessions are available on these dates:

  • Session 1: August 2 - 5; Friday, August 6 is an asynchronous day (self-directed) to complete work needed for the credit recovery track. 
  • Session 2: August 9 – 12; Friday, August 13 is an asynchronous day (self-directed) to complete work needed for the credit recovery track. 

Students will meet at a nearby high school and then get free transportation to each location. All materials and gear are provided to students.

Summer Scholars in the Arts

MPS' Summer Scholars in the Arts provides an array of arts classes for students in grades 9-12 including music, visual arts, performing arts, ceramics, embroidery and textiles, and much more. Students should register directly to the classes they are interested in. All classes are free.

Community Education's Super Summer 

Community Education's Super Summer provides new experiences for youth this summer that provide education enrichment, skill building, a sense of community, social and emotional learning, and recreational opportunities. Check out our free or low-cost, in-person options throughout Minneapolis. Customize a schedule to meet your needs including full day, weekly AM and PM classes for up to eight weeks beginning in June. Register now for Super Summer programs

Summer Arts Courses at The FAIR School for Arts

Love the Arts Scene? Come be a part of it in downtown Minneapolis as it reawakens this summer!  Are you looking for a chance to express your identity, develop your skills, and meet new people?  Dance, draw, paint, sing, play, and create at The FAIR High School for Arts, MacPhail, Hennepin Theater Trust and the Cowles Center.  Paint a social justice mural for George Floyd square, design a skateboard, work backstage in a theater, produce digital music, learn the ukulele and more. Options are available for students in grades 4-12. Students living in Minneapolis and surrounding communities are welcome. Community Education's School Spirit Sport Camps 

Community Education will be providing two MPS’ School Spirit Sport Camps the week of August 2-6 and August 9-15, 2021, for participants entering grades K-5 with both morning and afternoon options. Sport Camps are free, transportation is provided and kids get an opportunity to see themselves as part of high school athletics. Sports will be played on the varsity field and will include soccer, volleyball, flag football and track. Adaptive sports will also be available. Register today! Questions can be direct

Online Summer Enrichment Opportunities

MPS also provides students with many online enrichment opportunities that students can enjoy throughout the summer.  

Minneapolis Kids - Child Care

Minneapolis Kids provides fun, engaging summer care for youth entering 1st-7th grade. Full day programing is available from 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with care available before and after Summer Scholars and Super Summer programs. Programing at all sites include activities throughout the day that promote: 
  • Social and emotional learning 
  • STEAM 
  • Literacy 
  • Health and Physical Activity
  • Service Learning 
  • Community Connections 
Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are provided. Financial assistance through county and community resources may be available to qualifying families. Registration today!
