Parent tips

Family engagement is key to academic achievement. When families are involved in their child’s learning and school experience, it makes it easier for their child to be successful in school.

  • Help your child get ready in the morning so he or she arrives at school on time and ready to learn.
  • Ask your child what he or she learns in school each day.
  • Set aside time to help your child with his or her homework.
  • Connect with your child’s teacher throughout the school year to learn how you can support his or her academic achievement.
  • Families may connect with teachers on the phone, during parent-teacher conferences or at other scheduled meetings.

Is your child pre-screened for kindergarten?

All incoming kindergarten students must be screened before entering school. We recommend that children be screened at age three, but call any time if you are concerned about your child’s growth and development. Call our Early Childhood Education department at 612.668.3715 to schedule an appointment and to learn more about the programs that are available for your family.

Is your home address and contact information up to date?

Call your school if you have recently moved or changed childcare providers. Our transportation department will ensure that your child has a ride to school on the first day. Your child’s school also has an automated telephone system to notify you of special events or emergencies.

Do you need before- or after-school child care?

Look no further than your child’s school. Minneapolis Community Education offers Minneapolis Kids, a before- and after-school childcare program. Minneapolis Kids also offers kindergarten/High Five morning and afternoon programs in addition to childcare on school release days. Call Community Education at 612.668.3890 to learn more.
