Harrison Educational Center

MPS is beginning a process of redirecting resources from the Davis Service Center to schools, and redesigning services to better meet the needs of our students and families. The Acceleration 2020 strategic plan, along with our work with the Office of Black Male Student Achievement and the information gathered through the Special Education Opportunities Review, have informed changes to special education services and support throughout the school district. Our efforts to accelerate academic achievement for all students will undoubtedly change the way each one of us will work moving forward.

As part of this effort, several staff in the Special Education Department at the Davis Center have been excessed from their positions and have been encouraged to bring their talents to serve students in our schools.

We have also recently announced a new vision for Harrison Educational Center. The design of a new Harrison program requires drastic changes, both in program structure and roles and responsibilities of school staff. In an effort to support the positive changes needed for our students, all current teachers and SEAs at Harrison will be excessed from their positions and will be given the opportunity to reapply for the newly designed positions that have been created at Harrison as part of the new program. This process is called a “fresh start.”

Harrison has amazing staff who care deeply about the well-being of our students and we will be excited to welcome many of them back to the new Harrison program. Harrison will also need to hire three additional teachers, two deans, one family liaison, and one family and school advocate in order to support the new program model and staff the new elective courses.

As we bring this school year to a close and begin our planning for next school year, we will continue to focus on strengthening our services and supports, leading to rapidly improving outcomes for our students.
